Expert Witness: Dr. Arun Ramanathan


Arun Ramanathan, Ed.D., is the Executive Director of Education Trust—West (EdTrust-West). EdTrust-West is a statewide educational policy, research, and advocacy organization dedicated to exposing and forever closing the opportunity and achievement gaps that separate students of color and low-income students from other youth in California. Prior to joining EdTrust-West, Dr. Ramanathan was the chief student services officer for the San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD). Dr. Ramanathan has also served as the special assistant for three superintendents at SDUSD, and as the executive director for government relations at SDUSD. Dr. Ramanathan earned a B.A. from Dartmouth College, a M.Ed. from Boston College, and an Ed.D. from Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Dr. Ramanathan is expected to testify at trial about the following topics and issues:

  • The student achievement gap between ethnic and socioeconomic groups in California
  • The effects on the student achievement gaps of seniority-based layoffs
  • Efforts by school districts to deviate from seniority-based layoffs
  • The likelihood that school districts will announce reductions in force in future school years
