Lay Witness: Nicholas Melvoin


Nicholas Melvoin is a former teacher of the Los Angeles Unified School District, where he worked at Markham Middle School in Watts, California. He was placed there by Teach for America after doing his undergraduate degree at Harvard University. During his time at Markham he was laid off twice due to budget cuts, but stayed on willingly as an hourly substitute teacher. After this experience, Mr. Melvoin earned a master’s in urban education from Loyola Marymount School of Education. Due to his dedication to civil rights, he was granted a full scholarship to the New York University School of Law. Mr. Melvoin is currently undertaking a fellowship at the ACLU of Southern California, where he is defending students’ rights with Education Pioneers.
