ACTION ALERT: California students can’t wait. Click here to tell Governor Brown and the California Legislature that our students deserve great teachers!

Our Mission

A national nonprofit organization founded in 2011, Students Matter promotes access to quality public education through impact litigation, communications and advocacy. Students Matter fights for education equality in the court of law and in the court of public opinion, where students’ rights and voices matter most.

We believe in the power of a good teacher. Research shows that quality teachers make the difference—not only in students’ academic performance but also in lifetime achievement. Learn more about the power of effective teachers.

We believe our future depends on every child having a high-quality education, which starts with every child having an effective teacher in every classroom on every day.

Our Team

Public school advocate, engineer and parent David F. Welch founded Students Matter to defend children’s fundamental right to have an equal opportunity to access quality public education. Learn more about Dave.

From day one, Students Matter has partnered with RALLY, an issue advocacy firm that works at the intersection of strategic communications and public policy. RALLY manages communications, coalition-building and strategy on behalf of Students Matter. Learn more about RALLY.

To argue the groundbreaking first case sponsored by Students Matter, we’ve assembled an all-star legal team led by renowned attorneys Theodore B. Olson, Theodore J. Boutrous and Marcellus A. McRae. Learn more about the legal team from Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher.
